One Piece at a Time
Learning to trust God with the next step when we can’t see the whole picture.
Funny how God can encounter us in our dreams and speak to us about what is relevant in our current season. I had just finished celebrating a 4-0 fantasy football team this week, and although that has been a fun side passion, it’s a mere distraction from the reality of co-owning a business and navigating all of the stressors that come with this season of life.
Over the past year, my husband and I have been contending for our newly established business here in Austin. What began as a way to create income during a season of transition has become our bread and butter. We’ve had to trust God to open the right doors, connect us to the right people, and provide for us in ways we couldn’t always see.
Heavy with uncertainty, I laid my head down at the end of the day, not knowing that God was about to show me something.
I had a dream that my husband and I were playing fantasy football, but instead of NFL players, our team consisted of things happening in our lives. Our team was doing okay, but we were coming up on bye weeks and felt like we were running out of good player options. We were trying to strategize when I saw God’s hand enter the picture and slide me a new player, and then another. I could see there was this huge pile of people He had for us, but we were only being given one player at a time.
In that moment, I had this realization: we just don’t have all the players yet.
How many of us are asking God to work things out in our businesses, workplaces, finances, families, or futures? We want the big picture, but we are too impatient to receive one piece at a time.
In this dream, the pile of players God had stockpiled for us was impossibly big. It would have been too much for us to handle all at once. I realized I had been praying for the stockpile, while God was simply trying to hand me the next piece that fit this season of life and business.
Trust that He will supply all of your needs.
“And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 4:19
If you find yourself in a season of believing God to come through for you, maybe the prayer needs to shift from, “God, when are You going to come through?” to, “God, I trust You. What is the next piece You want to show me?”
Over the last year of building our business, we have seen countless times that God builds piece by piece, not by big outcomes. The next step may seem small, but often it is the exact piece needed to prepare us for everything that comes after.
